Clay Sculpture - Bankura Horses

What an experience our art topic, Animal,  has been! The children have produced some fantastic pieces through Summer 1 and developed a plethora of skills that they can apply in the future.

We began with a drawing masterclass, creating detailed sketches of dogs, horses and puffins by building on simple shapes. This really helped us to understand the process of refining art over time.

Next, we spent lots of time experimenting with air-drying clay. We began with simple shapes (balls, cylinders, cubes) before having a go at making flat horse heads. We practiced joining clay with dressmaking pins and decorating the surface with sculpting tools. These horse heads were inspired by Bankura horse sculptures.

Finally, we made our amazing 3D horse sculptures! This was such a step up in challenge but the children were ready for it and handled it beautifully - everyone applied so much focus and effort. They refined their models over time to ensure that they could stand independently.
